Expected US investigation against Saudi Arabia after the arrest of a former Trump advisor
American media confirmed that an extensive investigation would be launched soon against Saudi Arabia against the backdrop of its illegal efforts to gain influence in the United States.
This development comes after the outbreak of the case of Tom Barrack, a close advisor to US President Donald Trump, against the background of his suspicious relations with both Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
The New York Times said that Trump’s dealings with the UAE and Saudi Arabia would be closely investigated after the arrest of Tom Barrack.
The newspaper reported that Barak is accused of making Trump a close ally of the UAE and Saudi Arabia after receiving large sums of money illegally from the two countries.
The newspaper highlighted Trump’s boast that he saved bin Salman from the impact of the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in early October 2018, under the influence of the Saudi and Emirati lobby.
The Washington Post reported that Tom Barrack’s indictment included interfering in favor of Saudi Arabia and the UAE in the Gulf crisis and the blockade of Qatar.
The newspaper reported that Barack was active in blocking several senior US officials trying to convince Trump that Saudi Arabia and the UAE were funding terrorist groups.
One of the most prominent political influences of the pressure groups that Barak managed is that he pushed Trump to support the decision of Saudi Arabia and the UAE to impose a blockade on Qatar in 2017.
In parallel, Open Secrets revealed that the private company that Barak founded under the name Colony Capital raised at least $1.5 billion from the sovereign wealth funds of the UAE and Saudi Arabia after Trump’s victory.
The website indicated that Barak benefited from receiving large sums of money from Riyadh and Abu Dhabi in exchange for being active with the Trump administration to adopt positions in favor of the two countries.
Yesterday, the US Attorney revealed information about Thomas Barrack’s roles with Mohammed bin Salman.
The US attorney general said, “Trump’s ally and adviser, Thomas Barrack, played a major role in arranging a meeting between Trump and bin Salman on March 14, 2017.”
And US reports indicated that Barrack was arrested after the US prosecutor described him as “a very wealthy and powerful person who has strong ties with Lebanon, the UAE and Saudi Arabia, and this “represents a great danger that he will escape.”
The US Department of Justice formally charged Thomas Barrack, head of the inauguration committee of former US President Donald Trump, with “conspiracy” for the benefit of the UAE and other countries.
The US Justice Department stated that Trump’s ally, Barack and two others, an American citizen and an Emirati, were accused of “conspiring to influence Trump’s foreign policy positions in favor of the UAE.”
The three were also charged with crimes aimed at what prosecutors in the case called “the heart of our democracy.”
It said Trump ally Barrack, 74, of Santa Monica, California, was among three men indicted in federal court in Brooklyn, New York, with conspiracy to act as an unregistered foreign agent.
It indicated that this was while they were trying to influence the foreign policy of the United States.
Barrack, who served as Trump’s campaign advisor and then chair of his presidential inauguration committee, was also charged by the US Justice Department to obstruct justice and make multiple false statements during a June 2019 interview with federal agents.
The indictment included seven charges against Matthew Grimes, 27, of Aspen, Colorado, in addition to Rashid Sultan Rashid Al Malik Al Shehhi, 43 years old, from the United Arab Emirates.
“The defendants have benefited greatly from Barak’s friendships,” Acting Assistant Attorney General Mark Lesko said in a statement, as well as access to a candidate who was eventually elected president and high-ranking officials in the election campaign and government.
