Human rights efforts to impose international sanctions on Saudi judges

The Saudi authorities rules against the detained activists in prisons have sparked international human rights outrage. Recent trials of many human rights activists in the Saudi prisons prompted Magnitsky’s head Bill Browder to take action against these judges.

The organization’s president, Bill Browder, who has worked on Magnitsky law legislation in Europe, America and Canada, seeks to punish the Saudi judges.

Human rights sources told Saudi leaks that Browder is working to include judges and prosecutors’ names who were complicit in the torture and politicization of Lujain Al-Hathloul’s case.

The sources suggested that all their assets will be frozen and prevented from entering Europe, America, and Canada if these judges’ names are included.

Commenting on Al-Hathloul’s ruling, Browder said, “it is time to apply Magnitsky’s sanctions to judges and prosecutors in the Kingdom.”

Bill Browder is an American and British businessperson, investor, economist, human rights activist, and politician.

The Magnitsky Act is a bill submitted by the Democratic and Republican parties in the US Congress and approved by President Barack Obama in December 2012.

The law provides for the punishment of the Russian figures responsible for the death of tax accountant Sergey Magnitsky in his prison in Moscow in 2009.

Since 2016, the law has been enforced in all countries of the world, which authorizes the US government to impose sanctions on human rights violators worldwide.

By freezing their assets and banning them from entering the United States, the sanctions may extend to other things.

Magnitsky Prize

The Saudi activist, Prisoner of Conscience, Loujain Al-Hathloul, won the Magnitsky Prize for Human Rights.

Al-Hathloul’s winning the award constituted an international and human rights embarrassment to the Saudi authorities, who had been arresting her for years.

During a virtual award ceremony, Magnitsky Justice Campaign Director Bill Browder congratulated Loujain on winning the award for a prominent human rights activist.

“Congratulations on receiving the Magnitsky Prize for your brave work,” he tweeted.

He added that for “it is terrible that you cannot receive this (award) personally.”

Human Rights Violations

The European Union emphasized that the human rights situation in the Kingdom is difficult.

The European Union said it was closely following the human rights situation in the Kingdom.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen added, “We are closely following the human rights situation in Saudi Arabia.

We also monitor people who defend fundamental rights, including women’s rights and individual rights.
